Contemporary Mosaics for Home & Garden

Craft matters
Developing hand crafted mosaics
My studio is hidden away in a small historic courtyard in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. It is in the stable of what was William Hazeldine's house at the bottom of the Wyle Cop. He was one of the Ironmasters of the Industrial Revolution, so it is an amazing environment to work in with other craft workers.
I design and make contemporary mosaics for the home and garden. Originally I trained as jeweller and silversmith at Birmingham School of Jewellery, and now transferred many of those gem-setting skills to larger mosaic designs. I am attracted to using highly reflective materials and exploring surface patterns and colour.

Mosaic Gardens
Latest work in my mosaic floristry has been more about miniature garden, taking the garden stakes I usually make and working to about 10% of their size. The steel rods are really fine and the flowerheads bob as the wires vibrate with any movement.
Makers' Showcase
Mostyn Gallery, Llandudno
My mosaics have been selected for various showcases events at the prestigious Mostyn Gallery in North Wales
Private Commission
Six Panel Tree Mosaic
The commission was to create a series of six panels, each a variation of a tree design.
Sixteen Hearts
Wedding Commission
A romantic commission to create sixteen heart garden stakes for a couple renewing their wedding vows. One for each year of their marriage.
School Arts Week
Market Drayton Infant & Nursery School
Fantastic opportunity to work with Year 1 and 2 pupils creating a series of three mosaics that reflect their school logo of the Gingerbread Man and the beautiful school grounds.
Mosaic Pop-Up Garden
Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery
SMAG approached me to take part in a project linked to the Shrewsbury Food Festival, promoting healthy eating and growing your own food. I worked with museum visitors to create a series of two panels using the highly floral and decorative Coalport ceramic collection for inspiration.
The Mosaic Florist
New Design Direction
What started as a way of utilising those annoying off-cuts of backing board, the flowerhead series has developed.
Battlefield Blooms
Exhibition January - March 2018
To mark the centenary commemoration of the end of WW1 and at the Theatre Severn a new production of Poppyfields The Musical, there was be an exhibition of artists' work responding to those themes.
Farewell Present Commission
School Installation
What to buy a school community on retiring was a question posed by a local primary teacher. She decided on commissioning a bespoke mosaic to be mounted on an exterior wall for the children to enjoy.
Flowerhead Commission
Garden Interventions
As part of a garden being opened to the public during the National Garden Open Garden Scheme 2018, a client wanted to include some 'garden interventions', just in case flowers were late to bloom! Altogether there were three designs created, anenome, daffodil and peony with three flowerheads of each.
Mirror, Mirror
Decorative and Functional
Taking William Morris' statement about only owning items that were both functional and beautiful, my range of round and square mirrors were developed.
The Forest
Mosaic Forests
Decorative trees developed out embroidery designs and now hang at the University of Chester in Shrewsbury Campus.
Twin Trees
Extending the embroidered trees further
The single trees worked in isolation as decorative panels, now I extended the design to create a double tree, making more of the curved base and the earth between the roots.

London Garden I
Inspiration
Series of mosaic roundels 50-30cms in diameter. This commission started with one roundel on the back wall and using a metal lizard water feature as inspiration.
London Garden II
Why not have two more?
The clients were so pleased with the effect of the sunlight on the mosaic that they commissioned two more in the series of lizards and dragonflies.
Mixed Media Materials
To catch the light
,As many of the mosaics are designed for outdoor spaces, I use highly reflective materials including mirrored glass ... a lot! The effect created as the sunlight dances and catches the designs just brings the mosaic alive.
Hampton Wick School Newt
And everybody helped!
This four by two metre mosaic was designed and made with pupil and staff input. The newt is the school emblem and red was their school colour. Children from Nursery through to Year 2 came to work in the pop-up workshop and were very proud of the finished mosaic.

Primary school art workshops
Tailor-made to suit your school
I am a fully qualified and experienced primary teacher and my DBS can be checked through the Government Update Service. Workshops can be booked for half or full days, several days or as part of your school's arts week celebrations. Workshops focus on children exploring a new artistic skill and often working collaboratively on one piece of artwork. Schools may have a site-specific piece in mind that they would like to display. I also work on mixed media art projects as well as mosaics.
The Mosaic is amazing!! We are all so pleased! The children love it! Thank you for your hard work!
