Work in progress

Making mosaics

The process of making a mosaic is pretty straight forward but as I like to work directly with materials onto the boards. This is very akin to solving a puzzle but also calls on my jewellery training. If I were enamelling or gem-setting, I would be going through similar thought and design processes.

Here are some images of one piece in progress. The tree design is one I have returned to in a variety of media, including silk painting. I like the shapes created by the branches and the repetitive nature of leaves and flowers. The choice of dark grout came about having seen it used by other mosaic artists, Cleo Mussi and Amanda Andersen. Both artists create exquisite work with strong graphic lines.
